Market in grip of outside elements

April 8th, 2011 - Over the past period the market has been under heavy influence of unexpected events.

The situation in Libia together with the disaster that came over Japan, caused prices to revert down.

Once prices stabilised, consensus started to grow that the decrease was based on outside elements only. Considering grain fundamentals had not changed, the decrease was increasingly seen as a first buying opportunity for the new crops. As a result markets became active again and substantial volumes were traded. Prices increased rather quickly due to lack of offers from farmers, with traders serving the demand. As per today, prices have almost recovered to previous high levels.

In general grain markets remain uncertain and as seen unexpected events can result in dramatic changes.

Risk management is clearly gaining importance, and with inflation increasing, stability of cost price is a challenge for any food producer.
